Made it. Long day, tempers flaring, patience waning.
Sunny campsite. Most of Utah shut down for Pioneer Day and our reservation didn't go through.
A mom, 2 kids and a dog, driving in a Chevy Cruze from Maryland to Las Vegas. What could go wrong?

Leaving Las Vegas
Not my cup of tea but an experience to be sure. It might have been better if I had thousands of dollars to spend.
We had our first of the type of incident I was dreading when planning this trip. We ended up having dinner for two instead of three and enduring a barrage of swears in the restaurant. Consequence is today, so today will be rough too. We already had a consequence during our hotel stay that he couldn't use the room key. (Yes that's a drastic consequence to him. ) Today, Evelyn will sit in the front seat of the car. It's crazy that I feel scared to enforce a consequence but I do.
Today we head to camp at a state park near Park City, Utah. From there, a one night stay in a lodge in Snowmass, Colorado. We'll then spend 2 nights in Leadville, Colorado where my cousin's son is working as a guide at a hunting and fishing outfitter. We'll take a horse-back trail ride on Sunday.
I'm dreading getting back in the car, especially with all if the still-soaking clothes I washed in the bathtub yesterday.

Las Vegas
It is definitely nice to be in a hotel. The Westin is great and we are 2 blocks from the strip. Close enough to walk but away from the craziness. We keep remembering the Percy Jackson book where they walk into a casino and emerge weeks later with no idea that time has passed. That's what I feel like. Everything in Vegas is designed to suck you in, disorient you, and make you wander through their labyrinth. Ian becomes overwhelmed in a regular mall. Vegas is like a mall on steroids. Flashing lights, lots of different loud noises, too many stores, not enough places to sit, too many people. Sensory overload.
The kids have seen a lot of things here they don't need to. A woman collapsed from some kind of OD, people selling sex, lots of drunks. However several of the many homeless we've seen have been really friendly, giving the kids good advice. "Stay in school and listen to your mom so you don't end up like me!"
We went to the coca-cola store, the m&m store, had lunch at Harley Davidson, and went to see Turbo. We ordered room service for dinner cause we just couldn't face the strip again. I think that today just Evelyn and I will venture out and let ian have a tv marathon in the room. Btw, Evelyn loves Vegas.

Leg ?? Grand Canyon to Las Vegas
Baby came out of the Grand Canyon kennel smelling like pee. (Had to put him in fir ourcanceled mule ride. ) Didn't notice until we got to Vegas and I thought the whole city had a pee smell to it. I think it was me from sleeping with him. I wonder what the front desk thought as we walked in all smelly and dusty and unshowered.
First things first. We checked in, baby showered with me, I washed his collar, harness, and leash. I want to wash his bed but hotel laundry charges $1.50 to launder underwear. What so you think they'll charge for a dog bed? At least it doesn't need to be ironed.
Speaking of showers. Ian just mught have dreadlocks when you next see him.

Grand Canyon
This was a part of the trip I was most looking forward to. It was by far the hardest. Rained both evenings. Threat of lighting during the day so the mule ride was canceled. I guess 8(8!) people were struck by lightning last week. Nights were really cd. I regret leaving the sleeping bags behind. Had to buy blankets. Kids wanted to do minimal hiking so...
We visited the gift shops. A lot. We played UNO. We did Mad Libs. One book -twice through. I never knew that the words fart and poop could be nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and verbs. We took naps. We got annoyed with each other. This was baby's first camping trip. He did well, but woke up a lot the first night. There are gigantic ravens in the campground that constantly taunted him.
Tent worked well and we had everything we needed. Kids were helpful with dishes eac night and setup and take-down.
We saw several elk. Oh yeah, we saw the Grand Canyon.

Things I Love
Not wearing makeup.
Not wearing a watch.
75 mph speed limits.
Kinder, friendlier people (kids were offered a ride back from a long hike on the back of a stranger's ATV. I trusted my gut and let them go. )
Learning to trust my gut again.

Low-Clearance Vehicle and Montezuma
Last full day. Sedona has been really good to us! Great weather all week - just in 90s and 70s at night. Some rain every day.
Today we tried to do what looked like a super cool rock climb. Once again we got stymied by the low-clearance of our car. We made it about a mile before turning back. A mile at 3 mph takes a really long time. Instead we visited Montezumas Castle. Very cool, incorrectly named as it has nothing to do with the Aztecs. Art shops, laundry, pool, sad we leave tomorrow but glad to get Baby back.
Next adventure: Grand Canyon campin and mules.
We saw a tarantula today! Also enjoyed some roadside fry bread. Mini-golf too.
I have really enjoyed Sedona... Except for the fact that the dog couldn't come with us. We got lost, we got bored, we had fun, and especially had lots of adventures. My favorite part was going to the pool and going on all of the adventures that we did.
